THE HUMOROUS ILLUSTRATIONS OF WALTER TRIER HD
As with many of the subjects who have featured in this series to date, I had always assumed - erroneously - that for those with an interest in illustration Walter Trier would be quite widely known.
As a kid in the 1950s I saw a lot of his work in children's books and he was one of several humorous illustrators who made me think that's what I wanted to be, too. What I liked then and to this day was the deliberate absurdity of his images and the very unrealistic way he rendered them. So here he is for your consideration and I hope he makes a similar favourable impression on you.

A CENTURY OF ILLUSTRATED TRAVEL POSTERS HD
Переглядів 15 тис.День тому
In digging out images for this video I quickly became aware how many were unsigned and uncredited. So although I've included a few I have favoured images where I can name the illustrator. And although I have also included a few posters which have depicted the means of travel I have concentrated far more on the generally more engrossing scenic and human work. After much consideration I've left o...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF GUSTAF TENGGREN HD

Gustaf Tenggren isn't the only illustrator to have undergone a stylistic transformation, but with most others the change was to one extent or another evolutionary. In Tenggren's case the change of direction was apparently both instant and permanent. And in many ways his total output spans two distinctively different approaches to the creation of fantasy narratives during the 20th century.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF TAKEO TAKEI HD

Takeo Takei is another illustrator who featured briefly in an early instalment of the unsung heroes series. But as with others I subsequently managed to find more written and visual material, enabling a more detailed look at his life and career. As with quite a lot of Japanese art and culture I find his work both fascinating and baffling. Nevertheless it's a source of infinite pleasure and visu...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAN MARCIN SZANCER HD

In his lifetime Jan Marcin Szancer somehow found the time to write articles and scripts, work extensively in theatre, film and TV as a set and costume designer and even took occasional acting roles. He was the very first artistic director of The national Polish TV company between 1952 and 1958 and he also worked as a professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts for over two decades. But none of...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF THÉOPHILE STEINLEN HD
Переглядів 16 тис.Місяць тому
Outside his adopted country France the name Théophile Steinlen doesn't mean an awful lot to most people. He's certainly far less well remembered than his contemporary Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, even though at the time he was just as admired, if not more so. I can think of nobody who captured Parisian life, from the frivolous through to the heartbreaking, in the late 19th and early 20th century ...
THE ILLUSTRATED POSTERS OF ACHILLE MAUZAN HD

As is frequently and frustratingly the case there is only minimal biographical information about French poster artist Achille Mauzan. Please note I'm taking a holiday in a few day's time so I won't be able to reply to some comments until my return...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF HUGH THOMSON HD

It never ceases to amaze me that illustrators of the calibre of Hugh Thomson can become so sidelined in terms of awareness of their lives and achievements. I had intended to feature him in the unsung heroes series but subsequently found a large volume of his il...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF AUSTIN BRIGGS HD

In the USA Austin Briggs has a fairly solid reputation among many contemporary illustrators and those with an interest in the subject. THE CARTOONS AND CARICATURES OF HONORÉ DAUMIER HD

The story of Honoré Daumier isn't a particularly happy one. Despite his immense popular success as a humorous illustrator and caricaturist during his lifetime he was somewhat consumed with resentment that he failed to achieve similar success as an artist. As someone who never had the slightest ambition to be a proper artist I struggle to imagine why he just couldn't have been happy with the han...

I first featured Einar Nerman quite early in the unsung heroes series, but as with a growing number of others I felt should return to his work in greater detail. The title of this video is admittedly a little inaccurate, as Dudovich did also create a reasonable amount of work that wasn't for posters. In all his work he displayed a significant graphic talent, and sadly in this century he doesn't get the atte...

This look at the work of Irish illustrator Antony Groves-Raines is somewhat shorter than usual, for the frustrating reason that there is next to next to no biographical information about the man, and not a vast amount of decent resolution work to show either. Stunning video again, Pete. You are one of the most hard working creators on UA-cam. I have previously seen Trier's brilliant jabs at the führer and his companions, but here you have shown us the great depth of his work.

Thank you for another excellent video, Peter. It's a pity you could not find more of his work but I am sure it was not for the lack of trying. When my children were young they had several books of the crazy people type shown here. It seems a good idea is a good idea. The illustration of the wizard at 14:47 with the stuffed crocodile hanging from the ceiling was a bit of a surprise. In his Disc World book the late Terry Pratchett tells how every wizard had a stuffed crocodile hanging from the ceiling and though nobody knew why it was always taken as a sure sign that he was a real wizard.

Thank you again, Pete Beard! This is brilliant. Trier's illustrations had a deep impression on me (German, born in 1968). Greetings from Berlin, Gerd (Little remark: As far as I know Walter Trier's (1890-1951) pictures series "The Jolly Steamship" from the 1940s was only found in 2005 surprisingly in Erich Kästner's estate. With the verses by Harry Rowohlt (1945-2015), it has then been turned into a complete picture book for the first time)

Thank you for this. Some of his invariably kind, light work is kept here in Toronto and it has been shown along with other satirical art. “[The Art Gallery of Ontario] received a gift from the Trier-Fodor Foundation of over 1100 works by Trier and 345 folk toys. The gift was accompanied by an endowment to support the acquisition of humorous, satirical and illustrative art.”

Thank you, another gem! I appreciate your reminder that the art needs to be viewed thru the lenses of the time it was made. Not always politically correct, but a product of the age. Have you considered Beth & Joe Krush? I fondly remember their work from the 50's & 60's. Illustrated some of Elizabeth Enright's books.

To solstican (1936) του Einar Nermam
